Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dropped both games (9-0, 11-1) in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 0-6 overall, while the Lady Falcons improve to 4-8 in the standings.
Pfeiffer's first batter (Melanie Conklin) opened the game with a solo homerun to right field. Despite the rough start, senior pitcher
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) held Pfeiffer scoreless over the next four innings. Unfortunately, the Lady Golden Bulls were unable to muster up any offense.
Johnson C. Smith broke down defensively in the sixth and seventh innings. Pfeiffer recorded a combined 10 hits and four runs apiece in each of the final two innings.
Allison Braswell is credited with the (9-0) victory; facing 24 batters, giving up four hits, and eight strikeouts.
The Lady Golden Bulls fell behind early in game two. Pfeiffer scored five runs in the first two innings. JCSU scored their one and only run of the day in the bottom of the third inning. Senior catcher
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) took first base after being struck by a pitch. With senior shortstop/pitcher
Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) up to bat, Smith alertly stole second.
Chan belted a double to left field that brought Smith across home plate. That was the golden highlight of the evening as JCSU failed to collect another run and a six-run, four-hit fifth inning closed the game due to the NCAA eight-run rule (11-1).
Junior pitcher
Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL) struggled on the mound in her debut. Simmons allowed 11 hits, six walks, and only one K. On the offensive end, Chan and Simmons led the team with two hits each.
The Lady Golden Bulls return to action on Sunday, February 27th against Concord University. First pitch is this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Biddleville Park.
