Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team trumped Shaw University for a 73-67 divisional victory on Saturday evening inside the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. JCSU matches their win total from last season (18-10), while improving to 18-1 overall, 10-1 in the CIAA, and 4-0 in the Southern Division. The Lady Bears move to 12-10 overall, 5-6 in the conference, and 1-3 in the division.
Shaw jumped out to a solid start, holding a lead for the first seven minutes of play. Freshman center
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) tied the game (12-12) with a put back off a rebound at the 13:28 mark. The first half remained a seesaw battle until close to the five minute mark. Junior guard
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) drilled back to back three pointers to create some distance for JCSU.
J.C. Smith was up 38-28 at halftime. Shaw shot 36% (13-36) from the field, compared to 46.7% (14-30) for the Lady Golden Bulls. Quattlebaum had a team-high 12 points at the break, off 4-of-6 shooting from the three point line. Johnson C. Smith had 12 more rebounds (26-14) in the first period.
In the second half, JCSU extended their advantage to as much as 12 and held a 60-50 lead with 9:25 remaining. Shaw went on to score eight unanswered points for a 60-58 deficit with 5:51 on the clock. One made free throw from Allyssa Lane brought the Lady Bears within two (65-63) at the 2:49 mark. Senior guard
Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) hit a clutch three to expand the JCSU lead.
With time winding down, Johnson C. Smith sealed up the victory with solid free throw shooting. Despite a 38% (26-67) shooting performance, JCSU dominated the glass 50-32. Shaw was outscored 19-9 off second chances and 38-8 off points from the bench.

Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne) had a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds as a reserve. Quattlebaum finished with 12, while freshman forward
Shayla Russell (Bronx, NY) and senior center
Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) pitched in with eight points each. Neely nearly closed in on a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Aslea Williams produced a game-high 19 points for Shaw. Allyssa Lane and Jackie Sanders had 16 and 14 points, respectively for the Lady Bears.
Johnson C. Smith extends their winning streak to seven and improves to 9-0 on the road.
JCSU will face Fayetteville State University on Monday, February 7th in a divisional rematch. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. J.C. Smith defeated FSU earlier this season (01/29/11) 60-32 in Fayetteville, NC.
