J.C. Smith wins 8th consecutive game

– The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team received scoring from all over in their 86-58 divisional victory against Fayetteville State University on Monday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU wins their eight straight to improve to 19-1 overall, 11-1 in the CIAA, and 5-0 in the Southern. The Lady Broncos move to 6-15 overall, 4-8 in the conference, and 1-4 in the division.

Fayetteville State had a quick burst thanks to a three pointer from LaQuasha Jordan. Two field goals from junior guard Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) and one from senior guard Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY) put J.C. Smith ahead 6-5 with 16:07 on the clock. The Lady Golden Bulls would not lose the lead for the remainder of the contest.

J.C. Smith eventually pushed their advantage to 19 and closed out the first half up 44-27. FSU was outscored 28-2 off turnovers and 16-6 inside the paint. JCSU shot 50% (18-36) from the floor and 70% (7-10) from the free throw line in the first. Freshman forward Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) made her presence felt with 11 points and five rebounds, including 4-of-4 shooting from the field.

The Lady Golden Bulls held a double digit lead for the entire second half.FSU cut the lead to 17, but faced a 31-point deficit with less than two minutes to play.

Senior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) produced 12 points in the second half for a game-high 21 points and seven assists. Senior center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) and junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) each scored 11 points. Davis finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Jones ended her night with 10 points and five boards.

Johnson C. Smith was 18-36 from the field in both halves for a 50% (36-72) shooting performance. Fayetteville State shot 44% (23-52) on the evening, but committed 34 total turnovers. LaQuasha Jordan was the top scorer for FSU with 11 points and three assists.

“We're playing hard and it's good to see us get scoring from multiple areas,” said reigning CIAA Coach of the Week Vanessa Taylor. “Regardless of success, every game presents a new challenge and our next challenge is St. Augustine's.”

JCSU returns to the court for a divisional road game versus Saint Augustine's College on Saturday, February 12th. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium.
