Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team topped Chowan University 5-2 on Thursday morning in the opening round of the 2011 CIAA Tennis Championships held at the Virginia State Tennis Courts. The Golden Bulls entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed with a conference record of 10-6, while No. 4 seed Chowan stood with a 12-3 CIAA mark.
In tournament competition, the first team to earn five match points advances. JCSU led 2-1 after doubles play. Junior
Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) and All-CIAA sophomore
Margaret Jones (Newport News, VA) clipped Jennifer Mitchell and Brittney Moser 8-4 in No. 2 doubles. In similar fashion, junior
Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) and All-CIAA sophomore
Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) earned the second JCSU team point with an 8-6 victory against Jena'y Nelson and Melinda Williams at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Freshman duo Keina Love (Wilson, NC) and
Felicia Akande (Winston-Salem, NC) were tripped up by Inesa Asatryan and Tara Lunney 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. Asatryan also edged Love in No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0) for the other Chowan match point.
Allen, Barnes, and Jones put an end to the match with victories in number four, five and six singles, respectively. The number two and three singles matches, that featured Akande and Sue went unfinished.
Johnson C. Smith will face Winston-Salem State University on Friday, April 21st in the semifinals of the 2011 CIAA Tennis Championships. Match play is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts. WSSU defeated the Golden Bulls 9-0 twice this season during the divisional round-ups.
