Hampton, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team trumped Bowie State University (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) and Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (25-19, 28-26, 25-22) in three straight sets during the first day of competition at the 2011 CIAA Volleyball Roundup held inside the Boo Williams Sportsplex. JCSU improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA after victories against their last four opponents.
Senior captain
Jennifer Williams (Mitchellville, MD) led a balanced attacked against the Lady Bulldogs. Williams had a team-high nine kills along with 10 digs. Bowie State pushed J.C. Smith to an extra point in the first set, but fell 26-24. The Lady Golden Bulls outmatched BSU in the next two sets (25-20, 21-25) en route to victory.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sabrina Johnson fought off much of the offense for BSU with 16 digs, one solo block, and two service aces. As a team, JCSU recorded 77 digs, 12 aces, six solo blocks, and 26 kills. Sophomore setter
Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) racked up a team-high 20 assists.
In the match versus the Lady Lions, Johnson hit the floor for 11 digs and a team-high seven kills. JCSU took a lead halfway through the first set and held on for a 25-19 win. The second set was more of a nail biter, but J.C. Smith prevailed to take the set 28-26. The match came to a conclusion after a 25-22 third set win by the Lady Golden Bulls.
All eight matches for Johnson C. Smith this season have ended in three sets, win or lose.

Alexis Webb (Durham, NC) with 12 digs.
JCSU returns to the courts at the Boo Williams Sportsplex on Saturday, September 17th. Day two of the roundup will feature an 11:00 a.m. match against Chowan University, followed by a 2:00 p.m. contest versus Elizabeth City State University.
