Box Score vs. Shaw
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball dropped a tough divisional contest to Shaw University 3-1 (25-14, 15-25, 25-11, 25-23) on Friday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 4-11 overall and 2-7 in the CIAA; while the Lady Bears improve to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in conference.
Prior to the start of the match, JCSU volleyball took time to welcome the visiting Lady Spartans volleyball team from Sedgefield Middle School. Coach Richard Hill brought his team to Johnson C. Smith to meet the team and watch the Lady Golden Bulls in action. Head coach Emerald Fulmore and her squad spent a few minutes going through drills and offering tips to the middle school players before facing Shaw.
Odd, but J.C. Smith entered this contest 0-4 at home and in the midst of a six-match losing skid. The Brayboy faithful showed up to try and help the Lady Golden Bulls turn the tide.
Shaw started quick and earned an early advantage with a 25-14 victory in the first set. Crystal Gordon handled most of the attacks for the Lady Bears. Gordon utilized her 6'2 frame and tallied 17 kills and two solo blocks in the match.
Johnson C. Smith rebounded in the second set to grab a win. Sophomore outside hitter
Sabrina Johnson (Columbia, SC) was hot from the service line and put JCSU up big. The Lady Golden Bulls won the second set 25-15. Johnson concluded the contest with six service aces, six kills, and a solo block.
JCSU fell behind and lost the third set 25-11 to trail 2-1 in the match. The Lady Bears managed to stay energized, despite playing with a six-man roster throughout four sets. J.C. Smith held a 19-13 lead at one point in the fourth set. However, the Lady Bears battled back and eventually tied the set 23-23. Shayela Walton closed out the match at the service line for a 25-23 victory.
Sophomore setter
Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) had a team-high seven assists and five digs. Freshman middle hitter
Shaquanna Jackson (Greensboro, NC) chimed in with seven kills to lead the JCSU attack.
The Lady Golden Bulls will make another attempt at a home victory when they face Livingstone College. This tried and true, gold and blue rivalry is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 26th. JCSU could potentially snap their seven match losing streak, earn their first win at home and in the CIAA Southern Division (0-3), and just plain, old beat the Blue Bears with a victory.
