Richmond, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team had a non-divisional CIAA game slip away 85-84 to Virginia Union University on Monday night inside Barco-Stevens Hall. JCSU moves to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while VUU improves to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA.

Despite holding a 37-28 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, JCSU went into halftime tied 39-39. The Golden Bulls allowed an 11-2 VUU scoring burst even the score in the closing minutes.

Junior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC), sophomore forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA), and junior guard Phillip Wood (Suitland, MD) all carried the scoring load in the opening half. Parks had a team-high 12 points, followed by Williams and Wood with 10 and nine points, respectively.

After a see-saw battle in the second half, including the Golden Bulls overcoming a 63-56 deficit midway through; the game came down to one possession.

Wood tied the game 82-82 off two made free throws with 52 seconds left in regulation. Calvin Brown hit a three pointer 20 seconds later to give VUU an 85-82 advantage. Junior center Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) converted a field goal in the paint to cut the deficit to one (85-84).

JCSU quickly fouled and sent Brown to the free throw line with five seconds remaining. Brown missed the foul shot and the Golden Bulls had one last shot attempt. Unfortunately, Wood was off target with his jumper as time expired.

The Golden Bulls shot 53.6% (30-56) from the floor throughout the game. Virginia Union had eight turnovers, but forced 15 on JCSU.

Parks concluded the contest with a game-high 28 points with three assists. Boyd produced a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Wood and Williams scored double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) ended the night with 11 points, six boards, and three blocks off the bench.

Damion Harris had a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers. Brown pitched in 18 points and three steals for VUU.

Johnson C. Smith moves on to face #12 Bowie State University on Thursday, January 19th inside A.C. Jordan Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. on the campus of BSU in Bowie, MD.
