Golden Bulls stay unbeaten in the CIAA

Richmond, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team rallied back for a 65-51 win against Virginia Union University on Monday evening inside Barco-Stevens Hall. JCSU improves to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference, while VUU drops to 4-9 in the standings and 1-4 in the CIAA. The Golden Bulls have won their last five contests.

JCSU faced their first halftime deficit of the season. The team shot 24% from the field, only connecting on 7-of-29 attempts. By comparison, the Lady Panthers hit 44.8% from the floor (13-29) en route to a 28-18 advantage at the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Virginia Union pushed their lead to 15 (38-23) off a jumper by Parress Davis. However, VUU went scoreless over the next six minutes.

The Golden Bulls sparked a 16-0 scoring run during the Virginia Union drought. JCSU took a one point lead at the 9:11 mark off a free throw from senior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL).

Johnson C. Smith exploded on VUU throughout the remainder of the second half. Virginia Union was outscored 47-23 in the second half. JCSU improved their shooting percentage to 50 (14-28) and went to the free throw line for 23 attempts in the second frame.

Gamble led the way with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) and sophomore forward LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) each chipped in 14 points. Price also produced five steals and four boards. Wilkerson shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.

Vicki Collier produced 18 points and six rebounds, along with seven turnovers for the Lady Panthers. JCSU won the battle on the glass 41-30.

The Golden Bulls returns to action this weekend for a divisional matchup. JCSU challenges Livingstone College on Saturday, January 21st in Trent Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. This will be their third consecutive conference road game and first contest in the division.
