JCSU outscores the Blue Bears 40-30 in the second half

Salisbury, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team edges Livingstone College in a 74-69 divisional win on Saturday night inside Trent Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 8-8 overall, 3-3 in the CIAA, and 1-0 in the South; while the Blue Bears drop to 4-9 in the standings, 1-6 in the conference, and 0-1 in the division.

The first half was back and forth with the game tied eight times until 3:18 remaining. Livingstone closed out the opening with a 7-2 scoring run. Due to the Blue Bears' scoring spurt, JCSU trailed 39-34 at halftime.

Junior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) produced 11 points and three assists in the first half. Greg Henry of Livingstone kept pace with 10 points off 4-of-6 shooting.

In the second half, the Blue Bears maintained their advantage until midway through the period. Parks would eventually tie the contest for the ninth time at the free throw line. He later created some distance with a three-pointer in the corner off a dish from sophomore forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA).

With the exception of three baskets from Mark Thomas in the final 20 seconds, Livingstone failed to score from the field after the 7:32 mark. The Golden Bulls were able to hold onto a small advantage with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.

JCSU connected on 22-of-24 free throw attempts (92%) and shot 47% (8-17) in the second half. Meanwhile, Livingstone shot just 8-of-26 from the floor (31%) and 12-of-17 from the foul line (71%) in the final period.

Parks finished with a game-high 23 points and five assists. Williams chipped in 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) contributed with 10 points, five boards, and two blocks.

Thomas led the Blue Bears with 16 points and six assists. Henry and Nasir Austin pitched in 14 points apiece for LC.

The Golden Bulls conclude a five-game road stretch on Tuesday, January 24th against Virginia State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Daniel Gymnasium on the campus of VSU in Ettrick, VA.
