JCSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SENDS THE BLUE BEARS INTO HIBERNATION WITH A 73-62 VICTORY

Golden Bulls lead from start to finish

Salisbury, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team dominates nearby divisional rivalry Livingstone College with a 73-62 win on Saturday evening inside Trent Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 12-3 overall, 6-0 in the CIAA, and 1-0 in the division; while the Lady Blue Bears fall to 6-12 overall, 2-5 in the conference, and 0-1 in the South.

The Golden Bulls scored first, built a lead, and never relinquished their advantage. By the 12:22 mark of the first half, Livingstone faced a 24-6 deficit. JCSU shot 45.5% (15-33) from the field in the opening en route to a 42-29 halftime lead. By comparison, the Lady Blue Bears connected on 11-of-34 (32.4%) in the first half.

Nine players fit into the routine for Johnson C. Smith in the first half and all nine scored. Senior guard Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) led the way with 12 points and five rebounds.

In the second half, Livingstone managed to draw within four (54-50) with 8:33 left to play. The Golden Bulls responded over the next two and half minutes with six unanswered points; which brought the lead back to double digits (60-50).

JCSU closed out the ball game with a .404 shooting percentage (23-57). Price filled out her stat line with a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards, along with five steals and three blocks. Senior LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) produced 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Senior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) and sophomore forward LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) were key contributors with eight points each. Senior guard Ashley McGee (Milwaukee, WI) played like a true floor general with seven points and six boards.

The Lady Blue Bears were led by Kelcyn Manurs and Montiya Harrison with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Johnson C. Smith will finish out a four-game road streak on Tuesday, January 24th against Virginia State University. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Daniel Gymnasium on the campus of VSU in Ettrick, VA.
