LaQwesha Gamble snatched a game-high 14 rebounds with eight points in a 59-55 road victory over Virginia State

Ettrick, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team defeated Virginia State University 59-55 in a conference contest Tuesday evening inside Daniel Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the CIAA, while the Lady Trojans fall to 9-8 in the standings and 1-4 in the conference. With this victory, the Golden Bulls have a seven-game winning streak going.
JCSU pounced on Virginia State with 11 unanswered points in the opening seven minutes of the first half. The Lady Trojans managed to battle back before the end of the half and only trailed 25-18 at the break. Both teams had shooting struggles from the field in the first period. JCSU shot 31% (9-29) from the floor compared to 22% (7-32) shooting from VSU.
The Golden Bulls maintained control in the second half, but had to fight off a VSU comeback. After a series of three-pointers from the Lady Trojans and junior guard
Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC), JCSU held a 52-49 lead with 3:15 to play.
VSU was able to draw within one (54-53) with 1:34 on the clock. However, senior guard
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) squashed Virginia State's hopes of gaining the lead with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.

Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) put the game on ice with two made foul shots with eight seconds remaining. The Lady Trojans' final field goal attempt from the three point line was missed and time expired.
Nine Golden Bulls contributed to the winning, scoring effort. Price led the way with a team-high 10 points, along with four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore center
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) nearly zeroed in on a double-double with 10 boards and nine points. Both Gamble and senior guard
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) pitched in eight points. Gamble grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Marquilla Evans and Mariame Sylla paced the Lady Trojans with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Johnson C. Smith finally returns home to duel with divisional foe Fayetteville State University on Saturday, January 28th. This will be the team's second contest of the season against an opponent from the Southern Division. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Head coach Vanessa Taylor will be recognized after the game for earning her 200th coaching victory; which she achieved on December 16th.
