Golden Bulls outscored 42-34 in the second half

Ettrick, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team fell in a non-divisional contest to Virginia State University on Tuesday night inside Daniel Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 8-9 in the standings and 3-4 in the CIAA, while the Trojans improve to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

This was a classic CIAA tug-of-war on the hardwood in the first half. The Golden Bulls earned an advantage by scoring the final five points of the opening.

Junior guard Phillip Wood (Suitland, MD) tied and took a lead at the free throw line for JCSU at the 2:06 mark. Junior guard and reigning CIAA Player of the Week Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) also made two free throws for a 27-24 with under a minute. Parks dished to Wood for a layup at the buzzer, which had JCSU up 29-24 at halftime.

The Golden Bulls attacked early in the second half and went ahead by double digits (35-24). Later in the half, sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) nailed a three pointer with 14:33 on the clock. The long ball had the Golden Bulls ahead 40-33.

JCSU went cold momentarily and allowed the Trojans to spark a 9-0 scoring run within three minutes. With 5:26 on the clock, Parks drilled a three to tie the game for seventh and final time. Virginia State was able to get a lead and hold on throughout regulation with consistent free throw shooting.

VSU took 21 foul shots in the second half and connected on 16 (76%). More importantly, the Trojans shot 50% (12-24) from the floor compared to 36.7% (11-30) from the Golden Bulls in the final half.

Parks concluded the night with a game-high 27 points and six assists. Wilkerson and senior guard James Otey (Roanoke, VA) pitched in nine points. Junior center and post presence Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) fouled out after 13 minutes of play with just four points.

Kenny Mitchell was the top producer for VSU with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

JCSU returns to the comforts of home to face Fayetteville State University on Saturday, January 28th. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The Golden Bulls hold a 4-2 record inside Brayboy this season.
