JCSU stays unbeaten in the Southern Division

Box Score vs. WSSU

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team defeated Winston-Salem State University 76-70 in a divisional matchup inside Brayboy Gymnasium on Monday night. JCSU improves to 10-9 overall, 5-4 in the CIAA, and 3-0 in the division; while the Rams fall to 15-4 in the standings, 7-2 in the conference, and 1-2 in the Southern.

If this basketball game were compared to a boxing match, it can be said that both teams traded big punches early. Four minutes into the half, senior guard James Otey (Roanoke, VA) created some distance by drilling a three-pointer from the wing for a 12-8 JCSU advantage. The Rams answered and took the lead with back to back threes from Kimani Hunt.

At the midpoint of the half, junior center Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) tied the game for the third time with a back to the basket turnaround layup. A couple of minutes later, Boyd would also break the fourth tie by scoring in the post. After the fourth tie was broken, the Golden Bulls outscored WSSU 20-11 going into the locker room.

JCSU shot 50% (15-30) from the floor en route to a 40-31 halftime lead. Junior guard and reigning CIAA player of the week Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) had 15 points at the break. Boyd produced 14 points and six boards in the first half, including 6-of-8 shooting from the foul line.

Despite 64% (16-25) shooting from Winston-Salem State in the second half, the Golden Bulls never relinquished their lead. JCSU connected on 15-of-22 free throw attempts in the final period to pick up their second consecutive victory. The Golden Bulls also out-rebounded WSSU 36-27.

Parks scored one more point than his average with 25 and three boards. Boyd concluded the night with 19 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. Sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) nearly tabbed a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds. Otey chipped in 12 points and two assists.

The Rams also had four in double figures led by Marcus Wells with 14 points. Justin Glover and Kimani Hunt both dropped 13 points, followed by WyKevin Bazemore with 10 points and seven boards.

The Golden Bulls take on Shaw University, the top team in the CIAA, on Saturday, February 4th. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The Bears currently hold a 17-2 overall record, 9-0 conference mark, and rank 17th in the NABC poll.
