JCSU never trailed in the contest

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team showcased multiple scoring weapons in a 95-69 CIAA victory over Chowan University inside Brayboy Gymnasium on Wednesday night. JCSU improves to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Hawks move to 6-7 in the standings and 0-1 in conference play.

Five minutes into the contest, the Golden Bulls led Chowan 10-3 and never looked back. The Hawks were not able to get closer than a three point deficit in the first half. JCSU held a 27-24 advantage with 3:43 remaining before halftime. Over the next two and half minutes, the Golden Bulls sparked a 14-2 scoring run to lull Chowan before the break.

JCSU hit four three pointers during their scoring run, including a trio of treys from junior guard Phillip Wood (Suitland, MD). The Golden Bulls held a 41-30 lead at the half. Wood led the charge with 13 points and five rebounds in the first half. Fellow junior guard and NCAA DII scoring leader Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) followed with 12 points and two assists.

The Golden Bulls shot 44% (14-32) from the field compared to 38.7% (12-31) shooting from Chowan in the opening.

The second half was more of the same production from Johnson C. Smith. Chowan allowed a 10-2 scoring run by JCSU to place them in a 51-32 hole two minutes into the second frame. The Golden Bulls led by as much as 37 (95-58) with 3:29 left to play. JCSU exhibited some mercy and shut down their scoring in the final three minutes.

Four Golden Bulls finished with double digit point totals led by Phillip Wood. Wood concluded the evening with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds. He shot 8-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the three point line.

Parks, in more of a facilitator role, had 22 points and six assists. Sophomore guard Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) produced 15 points and four steals, including a monstrous two-handed slam off an inbounds pass. Junior center Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) pitched in with a solid performance of 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals.

“The tournament in Illinois over the break was a great experience for growth of our team,” said JCSU head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “The level of competition there forced us to examine our own talents. I was pleased to see how we have responded and gelled in some areas. I still have some concerns about our rebounding and team defense, but ultimately we're positively progressing.”

Rickey Lamb had 16 points and seven boards to lead Chowan. Quinton McDuffie and Kyree Bethel each produced 14 points for the Hawks.

The Golden Bulls return to their home court for their contest against Elizabeth City State University. This conference game is schedule for Saturday, January 7th at 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
