Box Score vs. Chowan
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team topped Chowan University 78-44 in CIAA competition on Wednesday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Lady Hawks fall to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA.
JCSU dominated the contest from beginning to end. The Golden Bulls jumped out to a 6-0 lead and Chowan played catch up throughout. The Lady Hawks shot 43% (9-21) from the floor compared to 36% (12-33) shooting for Johnson C. Smith in the first half. Despite the shooting percentages, JCSU held a 31-22 advantage at the break.
Sophomore center
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) paced the Golden Bulls with 11 points and five rebounds in the first half. In the opening frame, JCSU outscored Chowan 20-10 in the paint, 10-2 off turnovers, and 10-0 on second chance opportunities.
In the second half, Johnson C. Smith held a double digit lead for nearly 18 minutes. Chowan trailed by as much as 38 in the closing three minutes of the contest. The Golden Bulls shot a startling 71% (20-28) from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond the arc in the final half.
Junior guard
Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC) made her debut for JCSU with a game-high 17 points. She helped blow the game wide open with 5-for-5 shooting from the three point line. Dorsett shot 6-of-7 from the field in just 15 minutes of play off the bench.
Senior guard
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) connected on six of her eight field goal attempts for 13 points. Gamble filled out her stat line with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Davis concluded the night with 13 points and five boards. Senior guard
Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) and
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) chimed in with nine and eight points, respectively.
Talaya Lynch led Chowan with 16 points and five rebounds. Ransheda Jennings provided support with 10 points, but also had 10 turnovers.
Johnson C. Smith will look for a repeat performance in their next contest on Saturday, January 7th. JCSU will square off against Elizabeth City State University at 5:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
