LaQwesha Gamble played with passion and produced 19 points and eight boards in a 68-47 win over Elizabeth City State

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team overpowered Elizabeth City State University 68-47 in a CIAA clash Friday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while ECSU falls to 7-5 in the standings and 1-1 in the CIAA.
Despite the finale, the Golden Bulls had a slow and stagnant start to the first half. Elizabeth City State opened the game with an 11-4 burst in the initial four minutes of play. But JCSU responded with a 10-1 scoring run for a 14-12 lead at the nine minute mark.
Scoring droughts plagued the Lady Vikings heading to halftime. Johnson C. Smith eventually pushed their advantage to 15 (29-14) with less than two minutes before the break. ECSU trailed 29-18 at the half. The Golden Bulls held Elizabeth City to just eight field goals and 27.6% (8-29) shooting from the floor in the first half.
Senior guard
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) paced JCSU in scoring with 10 points and two steals in the opening.
JCSU continued to score and defend in the second half en route to the blowout win. The team's shooting percentage improved from 33% (11-33) in the first half to 45% (13-29) in the second. The Golden Bulls forced 25 turnovers throughout the contest. ECSU trailed for the entire second half, including a 24-point deficit with 2:11 left to play.
Gamble concluded the night with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) emerged with 11 points and two steals off the bench. Sophomore center
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) controlled the post for the Golden Bulls producing 10 points, eight rebounds, and a block.
Stephanie Harper was a workhorse for the Lady Vikings with a double-double of 20 points and 21 rebounds.
JCSU will now travel to Lincoln University, PA for their first of a four-game conference road stretch. The Golden Bulls face the Lady Lions of Lincoln (PA) on Monday, January 9th at 5:30 p.m. inside Manuel Rivero Hall.
