JCSU wins two of their last three matches

Box vs. Bowie State | Box vs. Lincoln | Box vs. VA Union

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team defeated Bowie State University (3-2) and Lincoln University (3-1), but lost to Virginia Union University (1-3) during the CIAA North-South Round-up held inside the C.E. Gaines Center on the campus of Winston-Salem State. The results of this past weekend improve JCSU to 3-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

JCSU took on Bowie State in their initial contest on Saturday morning. The Golden Bulls won the first two sets (25-21, 26-24), but dropped the next two (25-17, 25-21) against BSU. The Lady Bulldogs were narrowly edged 15-13 in the fifth and final set to give JCSU the victory. Junior Sabrina Johnson (Columbia, SC) and freshman Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) led the team with 15 kills each. Junior setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) tallied a match-high of 40 assists, along with nine digs.

The Golden Bulls generated a winning streak with a four set victory over Lincoln (PA). The Lady Lions won the second set (25-18), but were topped in the first, third, and fourth sets (25-21, 27-25, 25-19) of the contest. Sophomore middle hitter Shaquanna Jackson (Greensboro, NC) led the offensive attack with a match-high 14 kills. Johnson contributed with nine kills and 13 digs, while Bazemore chipped in 29 assists and a team-high 15 digs.

Virginia Union managed to produce the only victory over JCSU in four sets. In fact, the Lady Panthers were the only team from the Northern Division to earn a win over a team from the Southern. JCSU won the first set (25-15), however VUU closed out the match with three consecutive wins (25-19, 25-23, 25-22). Doctor produced 14 kills and four digs. Senior Montavia Hawkins (Fort Washington, MD) had a team-high 14 digs and Bazemore dished out 23 assists.

JCSU will now prepare to host Winston-Salem State University in divisional match play on Thursday, October 4th inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
