Steven Aycock earns first career coaching victory over the Broncos

Box Score Fayetteville, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith University football tops Fayetteville State University 35-18 in a CIAA Southern Divisional matchup held inside Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium on Saturday afternoon. JCSU improves to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference; while the Broncos fall to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.

The Golden Bulls jumped out to a 21-0 lead by the time the clock reached the 5:06 mark of the second quarter. JCSU produced two touchdowns in the first quarter, one on offense and the other on defense. Senior running back Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) capped an eight play, 75 yard drive with a one yard TD run for the initial score. The Broncos squandered away an offensive drive at the JCSU five yard line with a fumble. Senior linebacker Darryl Rankin (Charlotte, NC) scooped the fumble and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown.

“This game showcased our ability to maintain an offensive tempo and execute throughout the game,” said head coach Steven Aycock. Aycock celebrates his first career coaching victory over Fayetteville State in his fourth season at the helm. “We fell into a slight slump with the last two games; the guys (student-athletes) were tired of losing and it showed by our execution in practice and on the field today.”

JCSU held a 21-10 advantage going into the locker room at halftime. Fayetteville State managed to produce back to back seven play drives for a touchdown and a field goal before closing the first half.

The Golden Bulls immediately scored on the opening drive of the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) crossed the goal line off a one yard keeper to put JCSU ahead 28-10. The Broncos responded with a touchdown drive of their own. A botched snap resulted in the holder scrambling and scoring a two-point conversion.

In the fourth quarter, JCSU manufactured another smart, time-consuming drive for the last score of the contest. The Golden Bulls took five and half minutes off the clock with 11 plays before Wallace found junior tight end Jimmy Drye, Jr. (Concord, NC) in the end zone.

The game was put on ice after Rankin intercepted a pass from Andreas Hudson, which killed a FSU drive with 1:06 left to play.

JCSU recorded 369 yards of total offense of 67 plays. Wallace completed 21-of-28 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns in the air and one TD rushing. Anderson rushed for over 100 yards for the third time this season. He tallied 103 yards and a touchdown off 24 carries, as well as four receptions for 32 yards and a score.

Sophomore safety Kerry Hartley (New Orleans, LA) and freshman linebacker Austin Jacques (Springdale, MD) led the team in tackles with nine apiece. Rankin stood out with a defensive touchdown, an interception, and three tackles.

The Golden Bulls anticipate sparking a winning streak when they travel to Durham, NC to face Shaw University on Saturday, October 20th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. inside Durham County Stadium.
