Charlotte, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team crushed Morris College (S.C.) in four sets (25-11, 25-10, 21-25, 25-14) during their final home match of the season. Seniors
Montavia Hawkins and
LaQwesha Gamble were honored prior to the start of the match inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 5-13 overall, while the Lady Hornets fall to 4-10 overall.
JCSU quickly gained an advantage by winning the first two sets. Morris managed to avoid a sweep by claiming the third set in comeback fashion (25-21). The Golden Bulls raised their intensity and snatched the match victory by a score of 25-14 in the fourth set.
Sophomore middle hitter
Shaquanna Jackson (Greensboro, NC) had a match-high 13 kills. Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) and freshman
Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) followed with nine kills apiece. Junior setter
Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) dished out a match-high 17 assists.
With six matches remaining to be played, JCSU has already eclipsed their 2011 season win total. The team finished with a record of 4-26 last season.
The Golden Bulls will travel to Brevard, NC for a tri-match contest against Brevard, Limestone, and Converse on Saturday, October 20th. This will be their last non-conference action of the season.
