Durham, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith University football team trumps Shaw University 35-20 on Saturday afternoon inside Durham County Memorial Stadium. JCSU improves to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in CIAA, while the Bears drop in the standings with an identical record. The Golden Bulls top Shaw for the second consecutive year as their Homecoming opponent.
The Bears struck first on the scoreboard due to a mishap by JCSU. The Golden Bulls offense took the field after Shaw was stalled on their initial offensive series. However, sophomore quarterback
Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) had a miscommunication with his receiver, which led to his pass being intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Darnell Evans made the play for Shaw.
JCSU answered for the miscue in the second quarter. Sophomore safety
Kerry Hartley (New Orleans, LA) snatched his first career interception and returned the ball 22 yards to the Shaw 19 yard line. In just two plays, Wallace connected with senior receiver
Matthew Jeffries (Gainesville, GA) for an eight yard touchdown reception. The extra point tied the score 7-7 with 9:18 remaining in the second.
The score stayed knotted up at seven apiece until halftime.
The first Shaw offensive drive came to a close after senior linebacker
Darryl Rankin (Charlotte, NC) sacked James Stallons on fourth down. Later in the third, Hartley blocked and recovered a punt to give JCSU the ball at the Shaw 15 yard line. Wallace found Jeffries again for a 15 yard TD catch.
Bears' running back Marquise Grizzle fumbled on their next offensive possession and sophomore defensive tackle
Jabari Carney (Decatur, GA) recovered. JCSU quickly took advantage of the short field and scored their third touchdown of the contest. Senior tailback
Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) dashed through the middle for a 14 yard TD run.
The Golden Bulls went into the fourth quarter with the ball on offense and a 21-7 lead. Soon after the two teams switched sides of the field, Wallace completed his third TD pass of the game. This time, Wallace threw a 13 yard touchdown strike to junior tight end Jimmy Drye in the back of the end zone.
Evans put his second imprint on the game with a 90-yard touchdown kick return following the JCSU score. The Golden Bulls fired back with a seven play, 70 yard drive that was capped by Wallace running for a one yard TD.
Shaw ended up scoring their only offensive touchdown of the game in garbage time. With one second on the game clock, Antonio Dunn ran the ball in the end zone from one yard out after a time discrepancy.
Anderson rushed for a career-high of 185 yards off 24 carries with one touchdown. Jeffries caught a team-high five passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Wallace threw for 147 yards by completing 13-of-24 attempts and four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).
JCSU produced 333 yards of total offense (186 rushing, 147 passing) and held Shaw to just 22 yards rushing. Senior safety
Chris Sams (Decatur, GA) led the team in tackles with eight (7 solo). The Golden Bulls defense got to the quarterback on four occasions for sacks.
JCSU will attempt to build more momentum as they return to the Queen City for a divisional game with Saint Augustine's University. The Golden Bulls will host the Falcons for their 2012 Homecoming on Saturday, October 27th inside Irwin Belk Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
