Banner Elk, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a whopping 93-79 victory over Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 1-0 overall, while the Bobcats move to 0-1 in the standings.
The Golden Bulls got off to a fast start in the first half. The duo of sophomore forward
Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) and preseason All-CIAA senior guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) combined for 27 points in the initial period. E. Parks established an inside presence with five rebounds and 10 points off 5-of-6 shooting from the field, while T. Parks had a high of 17 points in the first.
After a three-pointer from junior forward
Kameko Walls (Winston-Salem, NC), the Golden Bulls moved ahead 42-27 with 4:07 remaining before halftime. The first half came to a close with JCSU leading 47-34. Lees-McRae shot 35.5% (11-31) from the floor compared to 51.4% (19-37) shooting for the Golden Bulls.
Lees-McRae was more competitive in the second half, but JCSU maintained control. The Golden Bulls only outscored the Bobcats 46-45 in the final frame. JCSU finished shooting 58% (36-62) from the field, while LMC shot 41.5% (27-65) for the afternoon.
Trevin Parks had a game-high 29 points, including three three-pointers in his season debut.
Emilio Parks had an impressive double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forwards
Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) and
Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) contributed with 10 points each. Wilkerson also had four rebounds and four blocks.
Daniel Sepokas led the Bobcats with 21 points, followed by Jeremiah Henry with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Stephen Joyner, Sr. recorded his 450th career win with the victory. His overall record moves to 450-271 with this being his 26th season coaching (all at JCSU). Joyner holds the all-time career wins record at JCSU and most wins of any active coach in the CIAA.
“We're still a work in progress, but we did some very good things and overall I'm pleased with the win, “said Joyner. “This has been a team goal; it's team win, as a staff we're trying to approach 500 and now we're 50 away,” commented Joyner in regards to the 450th victory.
The Golden Bulls will return to Charlotte for their next action on Friday, November 16th against Allen University (S.C.) in the annual JCSU Tip-off Classic. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium. The first contest of the tournament begins at 6:00 p.m. between Livingstone College and Felician College.
