Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team loses to Queens University of Charlotte 87-80 on Tuesday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 3-1 in the standings, while the Royals improve to 2-2 in the standings.
The Golden Bulls failed to get ahead for a lead throughout the first half. Queens shot 40.5% (15-37) from the floor and 41.7% (5-12) from the three-point line to stay out in front. The biggest setback for JCSU in the first half was their free throw shooting. The Golden Bulls shot 20% (2-10) from the charity stripe.
Despite the Royals leading 38-33 at the break, senior guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) had 15 points and three rebounds. Senior forward
Terrence Washington (Charleston, SC) pitched in with eight points and four boards.
In the second half, a 6-0 scoring run four minutes into the period put the Golden Bulls up for the first time (47-46). From there, the contest was a back and forth shoot-out. With 2:39 on the clock, the game reached its 11th tie after Antonio Stabler of Queens made two free throws.
After a missed jumper from freshman guard
Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX), Stabler grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up court. He managed to draw contact and convert a layup to give Queens the lead again. Stabler was successful on the free throw attempt and the Royals led 79-76 with 1:43 remaining.
In the final seconds, Parks penetrated the lane and was fouled by Brandon Nichols. He made both free throws to draw JCSU within one (81-80). With approximately 30 seconds left to play, the Golden Bulls were forced to foul the rest of the way. The Royals made good on their final four free throws and closed out the game with a victory.
Parks scored a game-high 36 points for the second consecutive game. He also had six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore forward
Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Washington concluded the evening with 10 points, five rebounds, and three blocks before fouling out. Junior forward
Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) produced 12 rebounds and eight points.
Five players scored double figures for Queens, led by Stabler with 17 points. Brent Evans contributed with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
“Tonight was just an old-fashion butt whooping;” said head coach
Stephen Joyner, Sr. “Queens had the greatest display of team basketball I've seen all season. They had five in double figures and shared the basketball extremely well. Hopefully, we learned something from tonight's game, but we won't be able to tell until we get to our next opponent.”
JCSU has completed their November schedule and will not take the court again until December 1st. The Golden Bulls will clash with Claflin University on Saturday evening in Brayboy Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
