Murfreesboro, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's team topped Chowan University 46-41 on Tuesday evening at the Helms Center. JCSU improves to 1-4 overall, while the Hawks remain winless at 0-4 in the standings. This contest did not count towards either team's conference record.

With the exception of the initial basket, a three-pointer form T'Arra Cutting, Chowan faced the deficit throughout the contest. The three-pointer from Cutting was quickly answered on the other end by senior guard Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC). In fact, the first three JCSU field goals were three-pointers from Dorsett. After five minutes of play, the Golden Bulls were up 11-3 and never looked back.

Chowan trailed 30-21 going into the locker room at halftime. JCSU shot 34.6% (9-26) in the first half and held a 20-13 rebounding advantage. Dorsett had nine points at the break, followed by sophomore forward Briya Dancer (Duncanville, TX) and freshman guard LaTondra Morrow (Charlotte, NC) with six points each.

In the second half, the Hawks battled back and eventually whittled the JCSU lead down to one (42-41) with 2:32 left to play. However with time winding down, clutch free throw shooting from junior forward LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) and Dorsett sealed the victory for the Golden Bulls.

Despite the victory, JCSU shot a season-low 26.7% (12-45) from the field compared to 32.7(16-49) shooting for Chowan.
Dorsett led the Golden Bulls in scoring for the fifth consecutive contest with a game-high 15 points. Dancer contributed with seven points, six rebounds, and two assists. Morrow had six points and four assists, while junior guard Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) pitched in six points and seven boards.

Janelle Murphy led the Hawks with 15 points and six assists. Danielle Coleman grabbed 10 boards and scored four for Chowan.

After opening the season with a five-game road stretch, JCSU finally comes back to Charlotte for their home opener. The Golden Bulls will face Claflin University on Saturday, December 1st inside Brayboy Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
