Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team defeated Claflin University 65-60 in non-conference action on Saturday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 2-4 overall, while the Lady Panthers drop to 1-7 in the standings.

The game remained tightly contested early in the first half with JCSU earning a 13-9 advantage with 13:28 to play. Claflin turned the tides with an 18-2 scoring run over the next five minutes. The Golden Bulls battled back from the 27-15 deficit, but still trailed 29-27 at halftime.

Senior guard Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC) led the way with nine points at the break. Junior guard Karnina Bunch (Vicksburg, MS) supported the scoring efforts with six points, shooting 50% (2-4) in the opening. Claflin out-rebounded the Golden Bulls 28-13 in the first period, but committed 12 turnovers.

A layup from Bunch with 10:19 remaining allowed JCSU to retake the lead (46-45) for the first time since midway through the first. The Lady Panthers managed to tie the score on two occasions, but never move back in front. The Golden Bulls essentially closed out the game in the final 75 seconds with solid free throw shooting.

JCSU went 8-for-8 at the foul line down the stretch for the distinction of remaining unbeaten at home this season. The Golden Bulls shot 45% (23-51) from the floor, compared to 39% (26-67) shooting for Claflin. The Lady Panther still held a huge 48-29 rebounding edge at the conclusion. However, the JCSU bench outscored 30-11, including an 18-2 advantage in the second half.

Dorsett finished with a team-high 19 points and three steals off 50% shooting from the field (5-10) and the three-point line (3-6). Bunch followed closely with 18 points and three assists.

Tylesha Brown led the Lady Panthers with 22 points and five steals, before fouling out in the final seconds.

The Golden Bulls will remain at home for their next contest against Benedict College on Saturday, December 8th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU will attempt to avenge a 57-38 season-opening loss to the Lady Tigers.
