Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dominated Belmont Abbey College for a 103-90 victory on the final calendar day of 2012 at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 7-3 overall, while the Crusaders drop to 8-3 in the standings.
The Golden Bulls came out on the attack; the team held a 13-3 lead in just under four minutes of play. Belmont did manage to draw within one (16-15) with a 12-3 run of their own over the next six minutes. But JCSU eventually pushed the lead back to double digits and closed the half with a 48-37 advantage.
Senior guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) set the pace with 18 points, shooting 75% (6-8) from the floor and 60% (3-5) from beyond the arc. Junior forward
Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) added 10 points and three rebounds towards the JCSU first half efforts.
JCSU shot 48% (14-29) from the field in the first half and their efficiency improved in the second half. The Golden Bulls continued to feed the interior en route to a 72% (21-29) second half shooting performance.
Sophomore forward
Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH), who had six points in the first half, recorded 15 points in the final half to finish with 21 points and seven boards. Parks shot 6-of-9 from the foul line in the opening to account for all his points. He went 7-of-8 from the field in the second half, all in the paint.
The Crusaders could never get closer than a nine-point deficit, but trailed by as much as 18. Belmont was outscored 52-34 in the paint, 27-17 off turnovers, and 14-4 in fast breaks.
T. Parks finished with a game-high 29 points and five assists. Williams scored a season-high 20 with seven assists and five rebounds. Senior forward Terrance Washington (Charleston, SC) chipped in 13 points, six boards and three blocks. Freshman guard
Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX) went 3-for-7 from the three point line for a season-high 10 points.
The Golden Bulls shot a season-high from the floor for a game at 60.3% (35-58) and for a half at 72.4% (21-29). JCSU scored a season-high 103 points and put up 100 plus points for the first time since scoring 103 against Newberry College on November 21, 2010.
Head coach
Stephen Joyner, Sr. missed this contest and turned over the coaching duties to longtime assistant
Mark Sherrill. Sherrill recorded his first victory given the situation as an interim coach.
JCSU will now travel up north to face Lincoln University of Pennsylvania for a conference clash on Thursday, January 3rd. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Manuel Rivera Hall.
