Golden Bulls out-rebounded 53-29

Wingate, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team drops a non-conference contest 73-61 to Wingate University on Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena. JCSU moves to 4-2 in the standings, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-3 overall.

The Golden Bulls jumped out to a 7-2 lead, getting five points from senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) in the early spurt. The Bulldogs responded with a 9-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Wingate fans were brought to their feet after a layup from Paidrick Matilus, followed by Deion Turman dunk, which had JCSU trailing 21-12 with 5:44 remaining in the half.

A pair of free throws from T. Parks, followed by a layup from sophomore forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) trimmed the lead down to five. A rebound and jumper in the paint from Odell Turner gave Wingate a 31-20 advantage at intermission. Turner produced a double-double at halftime of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Golden Bulls came out on fire in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to trim Wingate's advantage to three at the 18:54 mark. Freshman guard Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX) got it started with a four-point play, while E. Parks capped it with a jumper. Unfortunately, Wingate had an emphatic response, going on a 15-2 run to take a 16-point lead.

A jumper from T. Parks trimmed the lead to 13 at the 13:29 mark, but the Bulldogs answered with a bucket and two free throws to give Wingate an 18-point lead. Down the stretch, a pair of free throws from Quan Alexander had the Golden Bulls facing their largest deficit of the game at 68-48 with 4:25 to go. The lead would remain in double digits until the conclusion on the game.

Trevin Parks had a game-high 23 points to lead the JCSU attack. Parks entered the contest ranked second in NCAA Division II for scoring, averaging 27.6 points per contest. Emilio Parks added 16 points and five rebounds for the Golden Bulls.

The Bulldogs shot 38.9 percent from the field, hitting five-of-18 shots from three-point range (27.8 percent). The Golden Bulls shot 42.6 percent from the field, hitting three-of-19 shots from beyond the arc (15.8 percent). The Bulldogs held a 53-29 advantage in rebounding on the day, including a 26-7 edge in offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs piled up 32 second chance points, compared to 10 from the Golden Bulls.

The Golden Bulls return to action on Wednesday December 12th against Claflin University. JCSU will travel to Orangeburg, SC for a 7:30 p.m. start.
