Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team dominated Saint Augustine's College 68-49 in a divisional contest inside Brayboy Gymnasium on Saturday evening. JCSU improves to 17-4 overall, 11-1 in the CIAA, and 5-1 in the Southern; while the Lady Falcons fall to 11-11 overall, 6-6 in the conference, and 1-5 in the division.
Sometimes using the verb dominate can be a bit of an exaggeration, but in this case it's very fitting. JCSU led in this game for the entire time. In fact, the Golden Bulls started out with a 14-0 advantage. St. Augustine's did not score their first field goal until the 11:52 mark of the first half. By halftime, JCSU held a 38-18 lead.
Johnson C. Smith shot 41.7% (10-24) from the floor compared to 17.6% (6-34) shooting from the Lady Falcons. At the break, senior guard
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) and
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) led the Golden Bulls. Quattlebaum had a first half-high 13 points, followed by Gamble with nine points and eight rebounds.
JCSU had their largest lead of 22 (40-18) thirty seconds into the second frame. St. Augustine's failed to draw closer than 12 (57-45) en route to a double digit defeat.
St. Augustine's won the rebounding battle 46-36. However, JCSU forced the Lady Falcons into 29 turnovers and outscored them 29-12 off those miscues. The Golden Bulls ended the contest with a 42.9% shooting from the field.
Quattlebaum had a game-high 19 points and five assists. Gamble concluded the night with her 11th double-double of the season in the form of 16 points and 10 boards (9 defensive). Senior guard
Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
Keyona Bryant and Victoria Davis led the way for St. Augustine's. Bryant produced 14 and seven boards, while Davis pitched in 10 points and six rebounds.
In support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Play 4 Kay initiative, JCSU wore pink uniforms. The mission of the initiative is a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative.
