JCSU 0-2 in the regular season series against the Bears

Box Score Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team was trumped 94-74 by No. 12 Shaw University on Monday night inside the “intimate” C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 10-13 overall, 5-8 in the CIAA, and 3-4 in the division; while the Bears improve to 21-2 overall, 13-0 in conference, and clinch the Southern with a 7-0 mark.

The Golden Bulls had some bright spots, but Shaw appeared to be more athletic throughout the game. Junior center Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) scored the first points of the contest off a jumper. The Bears answered back with a field goal and then took the lead off free throws. JCSU never regained an advantage in the matchup.

Johnson C. Smith faced a 41-33 deficit at the break. Boyd had a team-high 11 points and five rebounds in the opening half. Junior guard Phillip Wood (Suitland, MD) contributed with seven points, but picked up three fouls in the first half.

Shaw shot 59.3% (16-27) from the floor in the first, compared to 35.5% (11-31) shooting for JCSU. The Golden Bulls improved their shooting percentage to 46.9% in the second, but the Bears continued to shoot above 50%.

JCSU trailed by as much as 29 in the second frame. Despite the slow scoring production in the initial half, three Golden Bulls finished with double figures. Wood had a team-high 15 points and seven boards. Junior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) came on late to end with 14 points and four assists. Boyd concluded the contest with 11 points and five rebounds.

Four Bears had impressive contributions led by Malik Alvin and Karron Johnson with 20 points each. Junius Chaney dropped 17 points, while Tony Smith added a triple-double of 11 points, 10 boards, and 10 assists.

The Golden Bulls have to continue their divisional road stretch on Saturday, February 18th against Winston-Salem State University. Tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Gaines Center on the campus of WSSU.
