Worst loss of the season for the Golden Bulls

Box Score Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team suffered a harsh 86-56 loss divisional to Shaw University on Monday evening inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. JCSU falls to 17-5 overall, 11-2 in the CIAA, and 5-2 in the Southern; while the Lady Bears improve to 17-6 in the standings, 12-1 in conference, and 6-1 in the division.

Despite the fact that Shaw's only loss in conference and in the division came out the hands of Johnson C. Smith, the rematch was completely one-sided. JCSU trailed at halftime 38-27 after shooting 28.9% (11-38) from the field. By comparison, Shaw connected on 17-of-38 (44.7%) shot attempts and narrowly won the rebounding battle 27-21.

Senior guards Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) and LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) paced the team with 10 and seven points, respectively. Crystal Harris of Shaw posed a problem in the paint with 10 points and nine rebounds in the opening half.

Shaw maintained control in the second period and led by double digits for the entire half. JCSU had identical shooting numbers in the first and second half. The Golden Bulls were 0-12 from the three point line for the contest.

Gamble finished with a game-high 21 points along with 15 rebounds. Price chipped in 14 points and seven boards.

Four Lady Bears had double figures including Kyria Buford and Harris with double-doubles. Buford had 19 points and 17 boards, followed by Harris with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

JCSU will square off against another divisional foe on the road when they play Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, February 18th. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the Gaines Center.
