JCSU loses fifth consecutive contest

Box Score Winston-Salem, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dropped a 68-56 divisional game to Winston-Salem State University on Saturday evening inside the C.E. Gaines Center. JCSU moves to 10-14 overall, 5-9 in the CIAA, and 3-5 in the Southern; while the Rams improve to 18-6 overall, 10-4 in conference, and 4-4 in the division. These two teams split the season series with both winning on their home floor.

The Golden Bulls fought for an advantage for most of the first half. The team finally broke through after sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) grabbed an offensive board and got the put back in the paint. Wilkerson's layup gave JCSU a 23-22 lead with 6:07 remaining in the opening. Unfortunately, WSSU outscored the Johnson C. Smith 16-9 to close the half with a 38-32 lead at the break.

Despite trailing, JCSU shot 58.3% (14-24) from the field compared to 50% (14-28) shooting for the Rams. Winston-Salem made four of their 10 three-point attempts (40%) and shot 85.7% (6-7) from the free throw line. The Golden Bulls connected on just one of six three-point shots and went 50% (3-6) from the foul line.

Juniors Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) and Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) each had a team-high nine points in the first half. Boyd also had four rebounds and made all four of his field goal attempts. Justin Glover had the hot hand for Winston-Salem State with 17 points in the initial frame.

The Rams never relinquished their lead in the second half. JCSU trailed by as much as 15 (57-42) with 6:26 remaining in regulation. The Golden Bulls' shooting fell to 33% (9-27) in the second period, including 0-of-7 from the three-point line.

Parks finished with a team-high 16 points. Boyd produced 13 points and eight rebounds, while Wilkerson concluded the night with 11 points and seven boards.

After scoring 17 in the first half, Glover ended with a game-high 19 points. Marcus Wells added 10 points and four assists for the Rams.

JCSU returns to the court on Monday, February 20th against Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC. This road divisional game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium.
