Shavonda Price scored a team-high18 points in the 78-63 victory over the Lady Rams in the C.E. Gaines Center
Box Score Winston-Salem, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team topped Winston-Salem State University 78-63 in a divisional contest Saturday afternoon inside the C.E. Gaines Center. JCSU improves to 18-5 overall, 12-2 in the CIAA, and 6-2 in the Southern; while the Lady Rams fall to 16-8 overall, 11-3 in conference, and 5-3 in the division.
JCSU controlled the tempo throughout the majority of the first half. Turnovers plagued the Lady Rams in the opening with a 15-4 disparity. The Golden Bulls outscored WSSU 18-0 off takeaways. Despite six lead changes in the first four minutes of the contest; Johnson C. Smith held a lead for the final 15 minutes of the period.
WSSU trailed 33-19 at the break. The Golden Bulls shot 33.3% (12-36) from the floor, compared to 28.6% (8-28) shooting from the Lady Rams. The senior backcourt of
Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) and
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) led the JCSU charge with eight points apiece. Sophomore center
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) followed with five points and four rebounds.
In the second half, the Lady Rams sparked a 5-0 run in the first two minutes of play. However, JCSU quickly erased the scoring run and were back up 15 (43-28) by the 14:25 mark. The Golden Bulls were ahead for the entire half and eventually pushed the lead to 20 with 3:32 remaining in the game.
Johnson C. Smith improved their shooting to 48.1% (13-27) in the second and shot 62.5% (25-40) from the foul line for the game. WSSU won the rebounding battle 52-40, but turned the ball over 21 times compared to nine for JCSU.
The collective Golden Bulls scoring effort was led by Price with 18 points. Quattlebaum finished with 15 points, followed by senior guard
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Davis and sophomore forward
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) both scored nine. Davis also grabbed 10 boards.
Courtney Medley had the top production for WSSU with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds.
Both these teams debuted in the week one NCAA DII Atlantic Regional rankings this week. JCSU in the No. 3 spot and the Lady Rams ranked eighth.
Johnson C. Smith stays on the road for divisional play against Saint Augustine's College on Monday, February 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, NC.
