Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team conclude their first home tournament with a 1-2 record. The Golden Bulls hosted the inaugural JCSU Softball Tournament at Biddleville Park on February 25-26. JCSU improves to 4-9 overall after a 6-1 victory over Bluefield State College and losses to West Virginia Tech (6-4) and West Virginia Wesleyan College (8-0).

JCSU took on West Virginia Tech in the first game of competition on day one. The Golden Bulls faced a 6-1 deficit after five innings. In the seventh and final inning, JCSU managed to record three runs and two hits, but not the victory. Senior left fielder Elizabeth McElveen (Florence, SC) tallied four hits off four at-bats and two runs.

Sophomore Jena Rae Serranzana (Panorama City, CA) is credit with the loss on the mound. She allowed eight hits, six runs, and one walk with one strikeout.

The Golden Bulls took care of business early in their second game of the tournament against Bluefield State. JCSU scored four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. With bases loaded, junior Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) crossed home plate after McElveen was hit by a pitch. Senior Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) hit a two RBI shot off the shortstop to score senior Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL) and sophomore Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA). McElveen was the last run scored in the inning.

JCSU scored a run in the third and fourth innings for a 6-0 advantage. Bluefield picked up their only run in the fifth. Freshman Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) recorded her second win of the season pitching. Peralta only allowed two hits and one run with four strikeouts.

In their third and final game of the tournament, the Golden Bulls played a bit sluggish. JCSU fell to West Virginia Wesleyan 8-0 in five innings. The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead after earning three runs in the first and another run in the second inning. WV Wesleyan moved ahead by eight with a four run fourth inning. JCSU had their first three batters strike out in the top of the fifth. The contest came to a conclusion due to the NCAA eight run rule after five innings.

In addition to the aforementioned teams, Montreat College and Virginia University of Lynchburg also participated in the tournament. West Virginia Tech and West Virginia Wesleyan both completed the tournament with a 3-0 record. JCSU, Montreat, and VA-Lynchburg were 1-2; while Bluefield State was winless at 0-3.

The Golden Bulls have a slight break before returning to action on Tuesday, March 6th. JCSU will face Claflin University inside Biddleville Park for a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
