Fayetteville, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dropped their second consecutive division game to Fayetteville State University 71-57 on Monday night inside Felton J. Capel Arena. JCSU moves to 10-11 overall, 5-6 in the CIAA, and 3-2 in the Southern Division; while the Broncos snap a seven-game losing streak to improve to 5-13 overall, 3-7 in the conference, and 1-4 in the division.

One of the biggest setbacks for JCSU in the first half was their leading scorer Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) getting into foul trouble. On top of the Golden Bulls shooting just 28% (7-25) from the field, Parks picked up three fouls and sat most of the period.

Meanwhile, FSU connected on 46% (13-28) of their shots from the floor. Tyrrel Tate carried the load for the Broncos with seven points in the opening; their top scorer Tim Plummer did not play due to a toe injury.

At the break, Johnson C. Smith trailed 33-21 and was outscored 16-8 in the paint. Parks had a team-high five points, followed by sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) with four points and five rebounds.

In the second half, the Golden Bulls capitalized on a FSU scoring drought to briefly move ahead. Down 40-33 at the 14:46 mark, JCSU scored eight unanswered points over the next four minutes for a one-point advantage. Senior forward Calvin Smith (Auburn, AL) converted a fast break layup for a 41-40 lead with less than 11 minutes to play.

Both teams traded buckets over the next five minutes. Parks eventually checked back in and gave the Golden Bulls a 55-52 lead with a three-pointer with 6:22 on the clock. Unfortunately, JCSU would not score again until there were only 46 seconds remaining in the game. By that time, the Broncos had a 15-0 run going for a 67-55 advantage.

Parks tied his season-low of 11 points with four assists. Senior guard James Otey (Roanoke, VA) had eight points and two rebounds. Both Parks and Otey accumulated four personal fouls. Freshman guard Jimmy Joyner (Wake Forest, NC) chipped in seven points.

Fayetteville State was led by Tate and Andre Best with 19 points apiece.

Johnson C. Smith will try to erase the thought of this game away on Saturday, February 11th when they face Saint Augustine's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The program will participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer effort by wearing sneakers with their regular professional attire.
