Felicia Akande went 3-0 in singles (#3) and doubles (#3) competition during the CIAA Cross Divisional Roundup
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team earned victories over Chowan University (5-4), Virginia Union University (6-3), and Elizabeth City State University (9-0) during the season's first CIAA Cross Divisional Roundup held March 9-10 at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. JCSU improves to 3-7 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
On day one, the Golden Bulls topped Chowan and Virginia Union. In the initial contest, the Hawks of Chowan won the first two double matches (8-4/8-0). But, sophomore
Felicia Akande (Winston-Salem, NC) and freshman
Nichelle Heard (Douglasville, GA) eclipsed Brittney Moser and Jena'y Nelson in the third doubles match with an 8-0 sweep.
In singles' action, Chowan had success again in the first two matches. Akande and Heard rebounded for JCSU with victories in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles contests, respectively. Junior
Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) defeated Moser (6-1/6-1) to tie the match 4-4. Junior
Margaret Jones (Newport News, VA) secured the win against Nelson (6-1/6-2) in the No. 6 singles spot.
Later in the afternoon, JCSU held a 2-1 advantage over Virginia Union after doubles competition. Jones and senior
Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) won the second doubles match, followed Akande and Heard winning the third.
The Lady Panthers picked up points in No. 1 and No. 2 singles. However, the Golden Bulls closed out the competition with wins in singles' matches three through six.
On day two, JCSU had a complete sweep over Elizabeth City State. Sophomore
Keiana Love (Wilson, NC) partnered with Barnes to beat out Christina McLean and Valerie Edwards. Love returned in singles action to trump McLean yet again.
Johnson C. Smith will host the season's second CIAA Cross Divisional Roundup on March 16-17 at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. The Golden Bulls will face Virginia State and Lincoln (PA) on day one, then play Bowie State on the final day.
