Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team finished 2-1 against the remaining competition from the CIAA Northern Division during the second cross-divisional roundup hosted by the Golden Bulls at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts March 16-17. JCSU lost to Virginia State (7-2), but swept Lincoln PA (9-0) and Bowie State (9-0) for wins.
Freshman
Nichelle Heard (Douglasville, GA) picked up victories for JCSU in singles and doubles competition against VSU. Heard teamed with sophomore
Felicia Akande (Winston-Salem, NC) for a victory in number three doubles. She then moved on to defeat Valencia Williams (6-0; 6-4) in number six singles action.
The Lady Trojans were successful in the first two doubles flights and the top five singles matches.
Johnson C. Smith quickly rebounded in matches against Lincoln and Bowie State. Sophomore
Keiana Love (Wilson, NC) and junior
Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) earned victories over the top doubles pairs from Lincoln (8-0) and BSU (8-2).
The number two doubles duo of seniors
Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) and
Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) knocked off both the Lady Lions and Lady Bulldogs by a score of 8-1 in each respective match.
Heard and Akande closed the second half of the roundup a perfect 3-0 at the third doubles spot. The pair blanked Shari Davis and Sherlina Holland of Lincoln (8-0) and only allowed one set point against Channae Manning and Rebekah Cabaltica of Bowie State (8-1).
JCSU had a clean sweep in singles competition over both opponents.
The Golden Bulls venture into divisional action this weekend (March 23-25) in the first CIAA Divisional Roundup hosted by Winston-Salem State University.
