Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team defeated Claflin University in both games (6-1 / 11-5) of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon inside Biddleville Park. JCSU improves to 6-9 overall, while the Panthers fall to 8-6 in the standings.

In game one, the Golden Bulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning. JCSU scored two runs in the second. Sophomore Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA) and freshman Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) both took base after being hit by a pitch. Senior Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL) knocked both runners in with a two-RBI double to left field.

JCSU tallied three hits and a run in the third. Junior Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) crossed home plate after a single from sophomore Jena Rae Serranzana (Panorama, City, CA). Buckley got on a base with a double and senior ShaDella Reese (Atlanta, GA) also singled in the inning.

Claflin finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Elana Worthy hit a sacrifice fly to score her teammate from third. At the mound, Simmons only allowed that one run and one hit in the inning for JCSU. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth. The Golden Bulls caught fire with a three run sixth inning to go up 6-1 in the contest.

Simmons concluded the game by forcing out the first three batters in the seventh and final inning. She had two strikeouts, walked two, and only gave up one run in her second victory of the season pitching.

The second contest was a lopsided victory for Johnson C. Smith from the beginning. Claflin trailed 8-1 going into the fourth. The Golden Bulls came close to winning by the NCAA eight-run rule, but the Panthers were able to produce three runs in the fourth and one run in the sixth.

Senior captain Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) led JCSU in game two with three hits, three runs scored, and a RBI.
Peralta won her third game of the year with a two strikeout performance.

JCSU will head to Raleigh, NC for the CIAA Softball Round-up taking place on March 9-11 at the Walnut Creek Complex. The Golden Bulls will face competition from the Northern Division throughout the weekend. First up is Lincoln University (PA) on Friday, March 9th at 1:30 p.m.
