Ettrick, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team topped Chowan University in the opening round of the 2012 CIAA Tennis Tournament hosted by Virginia State at the VSU Tennis Courts. JCSU entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and improve to 12-12 overall.
Chowan managed to jump out to a 2-1 lead after doubles competition. Sophomore 
Keiana Love (Wilson, NC) and junior 
Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) suffered an 8-0 loss in No. 1 doubles. The senior No. 2 doubles duo of 
Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) and 
Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) fell 8-2 against Inesa Asatryan and Heaven Rushing of Chowan.
Sophomore 
Felicia Akande (Winston-Salem, NC) and freshman 
Nichelle Heard (Douglasville, GA) finally put the Golden Bulls on the scoreboard with an 8-2 win in No. 3 doubles.
The Hawks expanded their advantage to 4-1 with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. JCSU swept the remaining singles spots No. 3 through No. 6 to earn a 5-4 win and advance in the tournament. Love played No. 1 singles, sophomore 
Imani Morrison (New York, NY) played No. 2 singles, Sue, Allen, Akande, and Heard played three through six singles, respectively.
