JCSU looking like a serious conference title contender

Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team completed the second CIAA Southern Divisional Roundup with a 4-1 record after a three-day event held March 30-April 1 at the Lions and Biltmore Hills Parks. JCSU improves to 11-12 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

The Golden Bulls won two matches against Saint Augustine's (8-1; 9-0) on the first day of competition. Shaw topped JCSU 9-0 on day two. Johnson C. Smith bounced back with victories over Livingstone (9-0) and Fayetteville State (5-4) on the third and final day.

Sophomore Keiana Love (Wilson, NC) had an 8-6 setback in No. 1 singles against Minyan Murphy of the Lady Falcons in match one. Love responded in the second match with an 8-6 victory of her own against the same opponent. JCSU was victorious in every other singles and doubles flight over St. Augustine's.

Shaw dominated competition with a 9-0 win on day two.  The Golden Bulls took out their frustration on nearby rival Livingstone with a 9-0 shutout.

JCSU edged Fayetteville State by just one point. Senior Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) and junior Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) picked up an 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Felicia Akande (Winston-Salem, NC) and freshman Nichelle Heard (Douglasville, GA) gained the Golden Bulls a 2-1 advantage with a default victory in No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Broncos won the first three singles contests. Akande and Heard tied the match 4-4 with wins in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Junior Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) won the match for JCSU with a default victory in No. 6 singles.

Johnson C. Smith currently has the third best record in the Southern Division, behind Shaw and Winston-Salem State.
The team will continue to fine tune in preparation for the CIAA Tennis Championship held April 18-21 in Petersburg, VA on the campus of Virginia State University.
