JCSU riding high on a three-game win streak

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dominates Elizabeth City State University 89-57 in CIAA action on Saturday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference with their third consecutive victory; while the Vikings fall to 9-6 in the standings and 2-3 in the CIAA.

Tonight's game marked the third contest in four nights for the Golden Bulls. The team appears to be maintaining their rhythm from one opponent to the next. Senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) got the ball rolling with a three-pointer to open the scoring. Senior forward Terrence Washington (Charleston, SC) followed that with a tomahawk slam to bring the Smith crowd to their feet.

Junior guard Richard Daniels, Jr. (Winston-Salem, NC) connected on two free throws to give the Golden Bulls a 7-0 lead in the first two and half minutes of play. JCSU never looked back or trailed throughout the contest. ECSU trailed by as much as 18 in the first half, but managed to head into halftime down 38-27.

Trevin Parks had 13 points in the opening period. Meanwhile, Angelo Sharpless led the Vikings with 21 of their 27 first half points.

In the second half, JCSU did not allow their advantage to fall below 10 points. In the closing seconds, a freshman connection of guard Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX) throwing an alley-oop for forward Alandre Davis (Florence, SC) to slam home capped the game with a 32-point win.

JCSU has outscored their last three opponents by a combined 84 points, included two 30-plus point victories. The Golden Bulls shot 53% (32-60) from the floor and had 21 assists as a team.

“We're beginning to show some consistency and it's really paying off,” said head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “This was our third game in a row having over 20 assists as a team, which shows we're sharing the basketball game. We want to continue to improve and hit our stride as tournament time approaches.”

T. Parks finished with a game-high 32 points, including 71% (5-7) shooting from the three point line. This was Parks' fourth 30-plus point performance of the season. Junior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) had 13 points and four assists. Sophomore forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) and Davis each had 10 points. Junior forward Antwan Wilkerson came close to a double-double with 10 rebounds (nine defensive) and eight points.

Sharpless ended the game with 27 points and seven rebounds. No other Viking scored more than five points.

The Golden Bulls will attempt to keep the good times rolling when they take on Virginia State University in the next game. Tip-off is scheduled for Monday, January 14th at 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
