Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team defeated Virginia State University 67-54 to earn a fourth straight win on Monday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the CIAA, while the Trojans fall to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

With the Golden Bulls playing their fourth game in six calendar days, the team played a little sluggish. After slightly falling behind the first six minutes of play, a three-pointer from junior forward Kameko Walls (Winston-Salem, NC) gave JCSU a one point lead. With score 21-19 in favor of the Golden Bulls, a 6-0 run moved the team ahead for good.

At the half, Virginia State trailed 36-28 due to a three by freshman guard Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX) to end the period. JCSU shot 45% (13-29) in the opening compared to 31% (11-36) for the Trojans. Senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) and junior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) both had eight points at the break.

In the second half, JCSU led for the entire frame even building their advantage up to 16 points.

“I noticed some fatigue tonight, which is to be expected considering the amount of games we've played over the last few days,” said head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “Our schedule lately was similar to playing in a tournament, I'm glad we've been successful through it and picked up some wins.”

Trevin Parks finished the game with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, despite only shooting 1-of-11 from the field. Parks connected on 13-of-14 free throws to accumulate his points. Wilkerson added 11 points and six boards, followed by sophomore forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) and junior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) with 10 points each.

Kenny Mitchell led the Trojans' attack with game-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds.

JCSU out-rebounded Virginia State 43-35 and only shot 37% (20-54) for the game.

The Golden Bulls enter into divisional play for their next game on Saturday, January 19th against Fayetteville State University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium.
