JCSU winning streak stops at five games

Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team was trumped 66-60 in division play by Saint Augustine's University on Wednesday evening in Emery Gymnasium. JCSU slides to 12-6 overall, 5-3 in the CIAA, and 1-1 in the South; while the Falcons improve to 12-6, 5-3 in the conference, and 2-0 in the division.

The first half boiled down to committee scoring by the Falcons versus senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC). Parks shot 43% (6-14) from the floor, including 3-of-5 (60%) from the three-point line for 17 points in the first half alone. Meanwhile, Saint Augustine's had six different players with points and three with a first half team-high of seven.

There were five lead changes and four ties in the opening. The Falcons outscored JCSU 18-4 in the paint and 6-0 off second chance opportunities.

JCSU trailed at halftime for the first time in six games. The Falcons held a 29-25 lead at the break. SAU dominated the glass with a 23-11 rebounding advantage. The Golden Bulls shot 30% (8-27) from the field compared to 44% (12-27) for Saint Augustine's.

In the second half, the Golden Bulls definitely flirted with the chances of a comeback. The Falcons led by as much as 49-35 with 10:34 remaining. JCSU exploded with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to close the gap. Junior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) began the run with a layup, followed by six of the next eight points by Parks.

Nick Chamblee gave SAU some breathing room (54-47) with a three-pointer at the 6:37 mark. With time winding down, junior guard Richard Daniels, Jr. (Winston-Salem, NC) nailed a three to cut the deficit to 57-53 with 3:30 left to play. Tyquan Stroman was fouled and made one of two free throw attempts for the Falcons.

Junior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) scored in transition with a layup to bring the Golden Bulls within three (58-55). Percy Woods responded for SAU with a layup of his own on the next possession. Parks penetrated the lane to draw contact and connected on two foul shots. Down 60-57 with 1:08 on the clock, the Golden Bulls fouled Jonathan Crawley in the post and he was successful on two free throws.

The Falcons essentially closed out the game in the final seconds from the free throws line. Daniels, Jr. made a second three to account for the final, but the contest was lost.

JCSU was dominated 34-18 for points in the paint, 16-2 in second chance points, 30-6 in bench points, and 51-26 in rebounding. Yet the team still had opportunities down the stretch to win. Senior forward and CIAA blocked shot leader Terrence Washington (Charleston, SC) did not participate in this contest.

Parks ended the night with a game-high 31 points and five assists. Williams had seven points before fouling out. Daniels, Jr. and freshman guard Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX) both had six points off two three-pointers. Sophomore forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) also had six points, along with nine rebounds.

Eight different Falcons scored led by Crawley with 15 points and eight boards.

The Golden Bulls will continue with their division schedule for their next game against Livingstone College. This classic rivalry game is schedule for Saturday, January 26th at 7:30 p.m. at Trent Gymnasium.
