Brittany Dorsett hit six three-pointers and shot 2-for-2 from the foul line for a game-high 20 points in a 77-62 win over Livingstone
Box Score Salisbury, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team trumps nearby rival Livingstone College 77-62 in a divisional contest on Saturday evening at Trent Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 6-12 overall, 3-6 in conference, and 1-2 in the Southern; while the Lady Blue Bears fall to 7-11 overall, 3-6 in the CIAA, and 1-2 in the division.
JCSU came out sharp in the first half. The team shot 44% (11-25) from the field, compared to 37% (10-27) for Livingstone. Senior guard
Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC) was the offensive force for the Golden Bulls in the opening. Dorsett connected on 4-of-9 (44%) from the three-point line for 12 of her 14 first half points.
The Lady Blue Bears maintained a scrappy effort early, but trailed 42-36 at the half. The score was tied twice, but JCSU never faced a deficit in the first half. Junior forward
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) contributed 10 points and a steal towards the Golden Bulls' advantage. Livingstone held a 21-16 rebounding edge.
Cierra York paced Livingstone with a first half team-high of nine points and five rebounds. York faced early foul trouble with three in the opening.
In the second half, the Golden Bulls continued to build upon their lead. Livingstone was outscored 21-6 in the first ten minutes of the play. Dorsett hit three more three-pointers in the second half to finish 6-of-11 (55%) from beyond the arc. She had a game-high 20 points, along with six rebounds, four steals, and only one turnover.
The Lady Blue Bears shot a rough 30% (8-27) from the floor, compared to 62% (13-21) for JCSU in the final period. The Golden Bulls had 19 turnovers, but forced 29 in the contest. JCSU outscored Livingstone 28-12 in the paint and 12-4 off fast breaks.
Wilkerson concluded her evening with 15 points, seven boards, and four steals. Freshman guard
LaTondra Morrow (Charlotte, NC) added 12 points, followed by junior guard
Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) with 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Junior guard
Kaylah Gholson (Brooklyn, NY) made a bigger impact on the game than her seven points, three assists, and three steals show in the stat sheet.
JCSU returns to home for their next matchup against Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday, January 30th. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium.
