Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dropped a divisional contest 92-82 to the No. 16 ranked Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday night at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 13-7 overall, 6-2 in the CIAA, and 2-2 in the Southern; while the Rams improve to 16-3 overall, 9-1 conference, and 3-1 in the division.

The Golden Bulls were edged by five points in each half to account for the result. JCSU never led by more than four points and faced a deceit from the 11:08 mark of the first half until the conclusion. Senior guard and NCAA DII leading scorer Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) battled individually with WSSU guard Justin Glover all evening.

Glover converted a layup with 13:49 on the clock in the opening half. Parks answered on the next possession with a three-pointer to give JCSU a 19-17 lead. The Rams made one of two free throw attempts to cut their deceit to one. Parks sank another three for a 22-18 Golden Bulls' advantage.

WSSU moved ahead off back to back scores of a dunk and three-pointer from Glover (23-22). Sophomore forward Marcus Walker (Raleigh, NC) recaptured the lead for JCSU with a two-handed jam in the paint. Glover connected again from beyond the arc for a 26-24 Rams lead. Sophomore forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) finished in the post off a pass from Trevin Parks to tie the game.

Winston-Salem State scored nine unanswered points to move ahead 35-26. The Golden Bulls trailed by as much as 12 and cut their deficit to as little as two before going into halftime down 50-45. Trevin Parks had 14 points and three assists in the opening. Emilio Parks chipped 11 points before the break.

Glover, who averaged 15.1 points per game entering the contest, had 20 points in the first half. He shot 67% (8-12) from the floor and 80% (4-5) from the three point line.

In the second half, JCSU failed to get closer than six and trailed by as much as 16. At the end of the game, the glaring disparities were the Golden Bulls being out-rebounded 36-26 and outscored 26-9 in second chance points and 25-16 off turnovers.

Both teams shot above 55% on the night. Trevin Parks concluded the contest with 22 points and six assists. Emilio Parks had 20 points and a steal before fouling out. Junior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) contributed with 14 points, four assists, and four boards. Junior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) nearly had a double-double with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

Glover finished with a game-high 29 points off 11-of-19 shooting. Wakefield Ellison was a perfect 5-for-5 from the three points and 7-for-8 (87.5%) from the field for 21 points.

“We lost tonight to a very mature ball club,” said JCSU head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “We showed some signs of fatigue and played tired at times, we had too many unforced turnovers, and they beat us in rebounding. But ultimately we just lost to a more mature team.”

JCSU will have an opportunity to right the ship in their next contest against Shaw University on Saturday, February 2nd. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium.
