Richmond, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team came up short 57-39 to Virginia Union University in cross-divisional action on Wednesday evening at Barco-Stevens Hall. JCSU moves to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA; while the Lady Panthers improve to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The first half had a pretty slow pace throughout for both teams. JCSU only connected on seven of their 25 field attempts (35%). Senior guard
Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC) carried the offensive load early with seven points in the opening. Dorsett also had four rebounds and a steal in 17 minutes of play.
At the break, VUU held a 25-17 advantage over the Golden Bulls. Paress Davis led the attack for the Lady Panthers with eight points and three boards. Virginia Union made 10 field goals, but only shot 33% (10-30) from the floor.
JCSU did not fare too much better in the second half. Their shooting improved to 42% (8-19), but turnovers were the ultimate setback. The Golden Bulls committed 32 total turnovers compared to 15 for VUU. The Panthers outscored JCSU 31-8 off turnovers and 28-12 in the paint.

Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) pitched in seven points (all in the second half) and three assists. Unfortunately, both Downer and freshman guard
LaTondra Morrow had six turnovers apiece.
Three Lady Panthers produced double figures led by Ashle Freeman with a game-high 18 points. Davis finished with 12 points, followed by Melyce Brown with 11 points.
The Golden Bulls are looking to blend their chemistry with three new additions to the lineup. Junior forward

Chelsea Faulhaber (Spartanburg, SC) and junior guard
Bianca Parker (New Castle, DE) suited up for the first time in the Gold and Blue.
JCSU returns home for their next contest on Saturday, January 12th against Elizabeth City State University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
