JCSU women's volleyball pulled together and seized a 3-2 divisional victory over Fayetteville State

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team defeated Fayetteville State University 3-2 (25-14, 23-25, 15-25, 26-24, 15-13) on Thursday, October 10th in a divisional match held at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the CIAA, while the Lady Broncos fall to 9-4 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
JCSU pounced on Fayetteville State in the first set and quickly earned a 25-14 win. The Lady Broncos shook off some of the rust from the road trip and rebounded in the second set. Although closely contested, FSU managed to tie the match with a 25-23 victory in the second set.
The Golden Bulls suddenly appeared overmatched in the third set. Fayetteville State maintained an advantage for the entire third set en route to a 25-15 win. JCSU refused to give up and fought hard for a 26-24 victory in the fourth set.
The Lady Broncos held a 24-23 lead in the fourth until sophomore hitter Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) spiked a set from senior setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) to tie the score 24-24. Sophomore Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, MN) took set-point with an ace from the service line. Another kill from Doctor secured the win and advanced the match to a fifth set.
Fayetteville State jumped out to an 8-2 led in the final set. However, after the two teams switched sides of the net, JCSU rattled off five consecutive points. A kill by DaQuondra Cuthbertson followed by an attack error by Doctor had FSU ahead 10-7. The scored eventually became knotted up 13 apiece. A kill from senior hitter Sabrina Johnson (Columbia, SC) resulted in match point (14-13) for the Golden Bulls.
An attack error by the Lady Broncos ended the contest and gave JCSU the win.
Junior hitter Jane Tukia (Tempe, AZ) led the offensive attack with a team-high 15 kills, along with three digs and two service aces. Doctor supported the effort with 10 kills and a solo block. Both Johnson and junior Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, NC) finished with eight kills and two service aces.
Taylor Norris and Shavon Shaw carried the Lady Broncos with 15 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Golden Bulls will stay at home for their next action on the court. JCSU will face Kings College (TN) and Morris College on Saturday, October 12th in a tri-match. Match play for the first match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
