JCSU volleyball rolled to a 3-0 win over Voorhees College during their Think Pink Night to raise awareness about breast cancer

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team dominated Voorhees College in a three-set victory (25-8, 25-9, 25-14) on Thursday, October 17th at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 11-11 overall with the win over a non-conference opponent.
The Golden Bulls appeared superior early in both of the first two sets. At one point, Voorhees trailed 14-4 in the first set and 21-6 in the second set. Junior Jane Tukia (Tempe, AZ) and sophomore Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) led the attack off setups from senior setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC).
With October being designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), JCSU volleyball wore pink with their uniforms to draw attention to the cause. NBCAM is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
Head coach
Mark Raley wore a pink shirt, wrote with a pink pen, and game programs were printed on pink paper. The team wore pink accessories (socks, headbands, ribbons, etc.) en route to victory.
Mrs. Mary DeWalt, a member of the JCSU 100 Club, shared her story of overcoming challenges from cancer and urging listeners (a mostly female audience) to get routine check-ups between the second and third sets.
After Mrs. DeWalt spoke, JCSU put away Voorhees in the third set. Tukia finished with a match-high 11 kills along with three service aces. Doctor followed with 10 kills off 11 attack attempts and one solo block. Junior Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, NC) pitched in with six kills, five aces, and a dig. Bazemore tallied 22 assists and three kills.
JCSU returns to the court for their home season finale against divisional rival Shaw University. Match play is scheduled for Monday, October 21st at 6:00 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The Golden Bulls will recognize seniors Sabrina Johnson (Columbia, SC), Teyonna Gore (Durham, NC), and Kayla Bazemore in between the second and third sets.
