JCSU volleyball sent seniors Kayla Bazemore (#6), Teyonna Gore (#5), and Sabrina Johnson (#2) out in style with a 3-0 divisional win over Shaw

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team topped Shaw University in three sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) for a divisional victory on Monday, October 21st at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 12-11 overall, 7-6 in the CIAA, and finish 5-7 at home this season.
Seniors Sabrina Johnson (Columbia, SC), Teyonna Gore (Durham, NC), and Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) were all recognized after the second set in their final home performance. Team manager and former volleyball student-athlete Elana Foster (Seattle, WA) also celebrated senior night.
JCSU controlled the pace of the match in all three sets. The Golden Bulls easily won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-20, respectively. The Lady Bears trailed 20-12 in the third set, but made a strong comeback. Shaw rattled off five consecutive points and eventually drew within one (21-20) in the set.
Two kills by Johnson, a kill by junior outside hitter Jane Tukia (Tempe, AZ), and an ace by sophomore Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, MN) sealed the win. Tukia and sophomore hitter Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) led the team with nine kills each. Bazemore had a match-high 19 assists along with three kills and two digs.
The Golden Bulls return to action on Tuesday, October 22nd against Benedict College. Match play is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the campus of Benedict in Columbia, SC.
