Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team fell shy of victory in a 13-6 divisional road loss to Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, November 2nd at John H. Baker Stadium. JCSU falls to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the CIAA, while the Falcons improve to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Golden Bulls struck early, but only once in the contest. Junior quarterback
Andrew Alexander (Charlotte, NC) led JCSU down the field on a nine play, 93 yard touchdown drive. Junior running back
LeAnder Barney (Erie, PA) put an exclamation mark on the drive with a 38 yard TD reception. The extra point attempt was block by John'ta Cooper and the Falcons trailed 6-0 in the first quarter.
The first half came to a close with the score still 6-0 in favor of JCSU.
Saint Augustine's broke their scoreless drought with a touchdown throw in the third quarter. Cyril Davis filled in for A.J. Gilford and connected with Chris Dalton for a 65 yard TD toss. The score gave the Falcons a 7-6 advantage with 1:43 remaining in the third.
Junior quarterback
Keahn Wallace (Miami, FL) checked in for Alexander midway through the third quarter. At the start of the fourth, Wallace had a pass intercepted deep in Golden Bulls territory. John'ta Cooper made the pick and returned it to the JCSU seven yard line.
Senior defensive back
Damion Miles (Beaufort, SC) bailed JCSU out with an interception in the end zone. Miles got a touchback and prevented another Falcons' score. Unfortunately, Wallace had a second pass intercepted on the ensuing drive by Jordan Griffin. Miles came to the rescue again with another interception in the red zone.
The Golden Bulls' next offensive series stalled and resulted in a turnover on downs with six minutes remaining. Davis threw a back-breaking 89 yard touchdown strike to Brian Richards with less than four minutes to play. SAU had a failed two-point conversion attempt, but held a 13-6 lead.
JCSU could move the ball into scoring range on their next drive. After a turnover on downs, Saint Augustine's regained possession and ran out the clock for the win.
The Golden Bulls had three turnovers, all interceptions. Saint Augustine's also had three interceptions and lost two fumbles.
Alexander went 13-of-20 for 131 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Wallace completed nine of his 16 passes for 55 yards with two interceptions. Sophomore receiver
