Greensburg, PA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team falls to Seton Hill University 59-41 on Saturday, November 30th at the McKenna Center. JCSU moves to 2-4 in the standings, while the Lady Griffins improve to 4-2 overall.
The Golden Bulls showed no big signs of rust in the first half offensively. Sophomore center
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, NC) scored in the post off an assist from sophomore guard
LaTondra Morrow (Charlotte, NC) to tie the game 4-4 early in the contest. Porter followed that shot with a three-pointer on the next possession for the first JCSU lead of the contest (7-4).
Two free throws from Meghan Mastroianni and a jumper by Mallory Sanner pushed Seton Hill ahead by one around the 16-minute mark. Senior guard
Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) recaptured the lead for the Golden Bulls with a three-pointer on the next offensive series. Downer's shot was the first of a 9-0 scoring run for JCSU to give them a 16-8 advantage.
Seton Hill responded with a 9-0 run of their own to reclaim a one-point lead with 11:22 on the clock. Senior guard
Karnina Bunch (Vicksburg, MS) finished two layups off a steal and assist from Porter for a 20-17 Golden Bulls' lead.
The Lady Griffins closed out the first half outscoring JCSU 10-6 for a 27-26 lead at halftime. Seton Hill shot 39% (11-28) from the field and the Golden Bulls were 31.6% (12-38) from the floor. JCSU had no free throw attempts, while the Lady Griffins were 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Bunch had a team-high six points and two assists, followed by Porter with five points and two rebounds. Mastroianni and Sanner had eight and six points, respectively for Seton Hill at the break.
JCSU fell into a deep hole after allowing a 16-3 run to the Lady Griffins in the initial six and half minutes of the second half. Porter made two consecutive field goals for the Golden Bulls to cut the deficit to 43-33 with 11 minutes remaining.
Seton Hill maintained a double digit advantage for the remainder of the contest. JCSU trailed by as much as 57-34 with less than five minutes, but battled back before time expired. The Golden Bulls were out-rebounded 51-39 for the game. JCSU finished shooting 23.5% (16-68) from the floor, while Seton Hill improved to 40.7% (22-54) from the field.
Porter concluded the contest with a team-high nine points. Bunch and Downer had seven points apiece. Freshman guard
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, NC) had a team-high seven rebounds.
Katie Gattuso led the Lady Griffins with a game-high double-double of 16 points and 12 boards. Sanner also had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
JCSU returns to the court on Saturday, December 7th against Paine College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium. The Golden Bulls are 1-0 at home this season and defeated Paine 73-72 on the road two games back.
