JCSU MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS THE 2013-14 SEASON WITH A 73-66 WIN OVER MOREHOUSE

Three Golden Bulls score double figures

Atlanta, GA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team made a 2013-14 season debut with a 73-66 victory against Morehouse College on Friday, November 8th inside the Forbes Arena. Senior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) had a game-high 18 points, followed by junior guard LaMarquis Letchaw (Dallas, TX) and junior forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

JCSU took a quick lead off a layup from Williams and then a three-pointer from Letchaw. Morehouse managed to tie the score on three occasions in the first half, but failed to gain a lead. Robert Askew tied the game 17-17 at the 7:06 mark of the opening period with a basket in the post. From there JCSU ignited with an 11-2 run over the next three minutes.

The Maroon Tigers trailed 33-24 at halftime. Williams was the catalyst with 10 first half points. Letchaw and Parks supported the effort with seven and six points, respectively in the initial frame. JCSU shot 54% (13-24) in the first half, compared to 35.7% (10-28) shooting for Morehouse. The Golden Bulls also held a 19-12 rebounding advantage.

In the second half, Morehouse surged with a 20-3 run to capture their first lead of the contest. Senior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) had layup followed by sophomore forward Christian Williams (Chesapeake, VA) with a layup and free throw after being fouled on the shot. JCSU retook an advantage (45-44) off a dunk by Parks with 10:10 left to play.

The Golden Bulls never trailed again after retaking the lead, in fact their advantage expanded to as much as 14 before the conclusion. JCSU held on to the lead and sealed the game shooting 9-of-12 from the free throw line in the final two minutes.

JCSU concluded the contest shooting 56.5% (26-46) from the floor and 74% (17-23) from the foul line. Morehouse shot 39% (25-63) from the field and 61% (8-13) from the charity stripe.

The Golden Bulls will remain in Atlanta, GA for their next matchup against Tuskegee University. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, November 9th at 3:00 p.m. inside the Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College.
